The Mela Kothi Chambal Safari Lodge near Bateshwar, is our family run eco-lodge nestling in 35 acres of reclaimed woodland surrounded by family our farm land. There are 8 independent cottages scattered in the grounds, 2 luxury rooms in the heritage wing of the main house, and 2 luxury suites in the new guest wing the Imli Kothi. The lodge is an oasis of calm and tranquillity and a world away from the chaotic madness of the cities.

The Kunj at Bateshwar was the Jarar family’s riverside retreat. It is strategically located on the river front at the edge of the temple crescent and has its own jetty and ghat. The Kunj served as an ideal resting place for the ladies of the household during the annual pilgrimage. The private ghat attached to the Kunj allowed the purdah bound women to take the all important dip in the Yamuna, away from prying eyes.

With the passage of time and changes in the family, the Kunj was overcome by neglect and fell into disrepair. With no one to answer to the appointed caretakers added to the damage, lighting fires in the baithaks and keeping livestock in the rooms. The intricate paintings were covered over with layers of lime wash and delicate arches rudely built over.

In 2009, Ram Pratap and Anu took charge of the Kunj and began the process of restoration. The Kunj will be restored with the help of experts from the ASI and craftsmen skilled in the use of limestone mortar. It is hoped that the property will be ready to receive guests by the end of 2012.

The Kunj rooftop is accessible to all our guests. The entire vista of the temples, ghats, river and ravines unfolds before you on the rooftop. The breathtaking views can be enjoyed whilst sipping a kular of the local tea or a glass of cool lemonade.
